Choosing the Right Hardwood Floor

When it comes time to choose a new hardwood floor, there are two options that you’ll need to consider: solid hardwood and engineered hardwood. Solid hardwood is made from genuine wood strips, and it has a uniform construction. In other words, each solid hardwood plank is only made from one strip of real wood. Solid hardwood therefore can handle multiple refinishes. Hardwood refinishing involves sanding the surface and re-applying surface finish and stain. Engineered hardwood flooring, unlike solid hardwood, does feature a special construction, as it is made from different wood layers. Consequently, engineered hardwood is more dimensionally stable than solid hardwood, so it does well to handle foot traffic and even moisture.

Hardwood flooring is generally recommended for home areas that do not have significant foot traffic and moisture. So, it’s suitable for areas such as bedrooms and living rooms. But, hardwood is not the best option for kitchens, bathrooms, and basements. Not sure if hardwood is right for your setting? Rest assured that our experts will help you make the right choice.

Solid Hardwood and Engineered Hardwood

Modern shoppers can browse hardwood flooring in two major categories: solid hardwood and engineered hardwood. While these two distinct flooring types appear similar on first glance, there’s more going on than meets the eye.

A more traditional choice, solid hardwood planks are fashioned using a single, solid piece of hardwood. Solid hardwood is cherished by purists and history buffs, and is often the wisest choice for those prone to major style changes. It can be sanded down and refinished for an almost infinite amount of times: that being said, it’s not a great option for spaces below grade, or rooms prone to humidity and moisture. For those spaces, engineered hardwood is much more appropriate. Built in dense, durable layers, this type of hardwood resists humidity: it’s also more economical. It lends itself nicely to spaces below grade, and can be refinished once or twice in its lifetime.
